A potted history - read on to find out more...
Back in 1987 the first training session for colts (mixed ages) was held in the walled garden of the grounds of The Manor House (courtesy of the Dimbleby Family)
The club played its first 'senior' game against TALE in a farmers field during September 1987 (at Tale)
The original scoresheet can be viewed at the clubhouse, however the original 'bribe' of £5 has yet to be spent over the bar! (see Keith)
It was then decided to reform the village cricket team which had been disabaded many years before.
An Inauguaral AGM was held at the Five Bells Pub in Clyst Hydon during January 1988.
Needing a field to play on a request was placed in the local paper and 4 local farmers offered their facilities, it was decided to take advantage of the kind offer from Geoff Gibbins to use part of 'The Lawns' (a local field central to the village) which then developed into the rental of about 3 acres.
Many people were served their cream teas from a small hut in the walled garden adjacent to The Manor House.
The first 'official' match was against Westbrick from Exeter which was lost due to the ball dissapearing in the long grass (following a missed catch by David Greig) and the away team ran 3 runs before the ball could be returned to the keeper.
Our first 'touring side' visited us back in 1988 (Swantons) and to this day we still play an annual fixture! They celebrated their victory by serving 'Bucks Fizz' on the square.
The installation of a temporary pavillion followed (most of which is still in use today) and the club moved to a new site in 1992 when the club purchased 'Merryfields' from Ted Lane.
Our first match was an evening game played against Cullompton which we won!
The club played only friendly games for many years and our first trophy success was a victory under the leadership of John Holmes in the Tiverton non-league cup. This victory was followed by wild celebrations in Clyst Hydon and unfortunately for the lads in the team the local maidens were then locked away for several days.
This was the inspiration behind joining the East Devon league (now the Devon league) and the team became very successful under the leadership of club captain Alan Baggs (now President of the club!)
Bringing the club history up to date we are currently represented by our First XI in the 'C' division and building on that success and aiming high are our entire Colts set-up who have achieved some excellent results and produced fine players who have gone on to represent various teams from the club and beyond!
